"Humanism" Original Poem
Humanism
by Sumin Lee
Everything makes us live,
Everything makes us die.
We build to live,
We build to die.
You won't remember I was here,
I won't remember you were here.
But the earth we stand on, stands for us.
The tall building covering the sky,
Covering the sun,
Covering the moon,
I tilt my head up to the floors I can't count.
We work to be housed,
The roof over my head and four walls around me,
I never felt you were of importance.
What are we alive for?
Everyday, I breathe.
Inhale,
Exhale.
I hope my energy fills the cracks in the concrete,
rise a flower from the gray.
You might not know I was here,
I might not know you were here.
But we were and we are.
The books, the iced lattes, the traffic lights,
Everything is proof that we were and we are.
