Me 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽 Music

Hey,

I was talking to my friend about questions for my q&a for my last post and I got the idea to do a whole separate post solely talking about music. Because I could go on and on and on so let's go.

These are my thoughts, opinions, and experiences. If it differs from yours, fuck you I mean um yeah.

PHILOSOPHY
  • For me, music needs to do one of two things: 1. Make me feel emotions 2. Make my ass shake.
I'm not a lyrical person. Like yes, I have songs that I can sing word for word, but that means it already fulfilled one of the two categories. I even had a classical music phase (that still comes and goes). Also, I'm just not very good at listening for the lyrics because the melody is just easier to decipher and remember if that makes any sense
  • If I find out that you're a dick, your music sounds lame. I will not and cannot separate the art from the artist
  • Great bridge = great song
  • Unfortunately, the first 10 seconds of the song matters a lot to me. I do not like it when songs start with those indecipherable ambiance noise
  • I don't like when songs do that looped fade out ending. Cut the mic.
HISTORY
This is more of my musical background, but why the hell not. When I was in elementary school, I played the piano and I was pretty good at it. But we had to move and I never went back to playing. RIP music reading skills. Then in middle school, I played the drums at church, it was very basic stuff though. It was a small Korean church—one guy singing and playing guitar, me on drums, and my mom on bass. My junior year in high school, I took a percussion class because I didn't feel like taking any other electives. I made friends with people that were in marching band and color guard along with the band director (don't really remember how that all transpired). So I tried out for drumline (with going to practice and all that) and I was bass 1 for marching season, played the rain stick and bongo drum for indoor percussion, and the euphonium for winter concert season (I had to write in the fingerings on the music sheet lol). Yes, I had a DCI & WGI phase. Yes, I had a Vic Firth lanyard. It was fun though, I enjoyed performing and practicing :)

ERAS
These are the pivotal songs that I listened to from each era. Back in my day, it was Pandora on my iPhone 4s with wired earphones that carried me. And the limited free skips that I had to ration during my bus ride to and from school lol. The songs are not in particular order, just written as I remember them.

Elementary
I was born in Korea so I grew up on 2nd gen kpop

Middle school
Bruno Mars - Talking to the Moon, Count on Me, and all of his songs from this era

High school
Troye Sivan - YOUTH
Rihanna - Bitch Better Have My Money (I distinctively remember watching this music video while my parents weren't home)
2NE1 - Crush album
Short story: summer of 2013, I volunteered at a city summer camp and my mom drove me. And every single day without fail, the top 2 songs on the radio would be Imagine Dragons - Radioactive and Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines. The girls were fighting. So I heard those songs everyday in the summer.

Community College
Amine - Caroline, Good For You album, ONEPOINTFIVE album, and TWOPOINTFIVE album
Chloe x Halle - Ungodly Hour and Ungodly Hour album
Ariana Grande - Positions album
Beyonce - HOMECOMING live album

University (now)
Beyonce - RENAISSANCE album
Beyonce - COWBOY CARTER album
Bad Bunny - DtMF and the DeBÍ TiRAR MΓ‘S FOToS album
Charli XCX - BRAT album

SUPERLATIVES
Okay okay, now for some categorization...

Songs that changed my life
Beyonce - I'M THAT GIRLALIEN SUPERSTAR The entire Renaissance album and the tour honestly. Her Renaissance tour was the first time I felt so safe in a new environment. And I am always on edge when I go to new places. I truly felt a new type of queer awakening. Like it showed me that queer spaces are where I need to be.

Songs that helped me through a hard time in life
Beyonce - BIGGER "If you feel insignificant, you better think again. Better wake up because you're part of something bigger" and then like the whole rest of the song. A lyrical hug.

Songs that brings me back to good moment/era
Seventeen - Rock With You One of the first comebacks I experienced once I started listening to Seventeen. I hadn't followed kpop in years and finding them was a breath of fresh air. Went through my peak consumerism phase with this...

So... why yes, Beyonce is my favorite artist. Please listen to this deep cut FIND YOUR WAY BACK. The Gift album is so underrated like the whole album is a deep cut. Crazy.

If you're ever bored, look up 20xx hit songs and memories will flood back to you.

And lastly,
Spotify > Apple Music
