Holy Glaze - boygrim
Hey twin!
I'm back with another episode of Holy Glaze. So I have a friend named Isaac that I met earlier this year. We bonded over hating overly sad emo bands (which I still stand by). And we've worked together through aka musique, including throwing his birthday show. I remember that show vividly because everyone was sooo stressed while I was like let's just get it going idk? And Isaac came up to me throughout the show talking about how successful the turnout was. He was very happy. I'm not sure if that was the first time I saw him perform, but it was definitely one of the firsts. And the energy was insane. I actually don't remember too much of the actual performance because I was busy working door and making sure everything else was good but like trust me, it was poppin. There's this sense of energy from him and the band when they perform that's different from other bands. Maybe because they're alt rock? Who knows. But like trust me.
Okay, let's dip into the songs. We have the classics, grimming on that boy until she buries me (bury me) and cemetery letters. There's something about their songs that sounds and feels artistic. And I don't have this opinion often, but I find myself liking the second verses more than the firsts in their songs. Bury me is giving fuck y'all I'm gonna do my own thing and I'm emo. Cemetery letters is giving someone being really frustrated at how much they love someone but it's not being reciprocated back. The whiny guitar in the intro literally feels like missing someone badddd. Random lore drop—boygrim is a full band now. I started this with just talking about Isaac and just casually switched. I don't know the full lore but his friends (Jack-drums, Seth-bass, and Vince-guitar) from Oceanside that has always (I think) played with him at shows are now fully together as one band, one sound. Another all male band. Great. jk. They are all nice and talented. Okay back to music. If you like the pop band sound, check this jawn out: Through the Weekend. This is a very recent find because I accidentally clicked the artist shuffle play and it came on while I was driving. And I was very surprised! Why is it good! I'm vibing! I wish there were more songs like this coming out, but he said that this era is over and if I mention it one more time, he's going to take me out back and pew pew me 👹🍅🍅🍅🍅
And I was saving the newest sauce for last—close the mf blinds. The first time I listened to it, I was like omfg? This is so good? And I felt the 3/4 time signature in my [redacted]? One of my favorites? I was honestly geeked. Until the screaming came on. Let me just say that I don't like screaming in general. Like even outside of music lol. So nothing personal. But I was so thrown off that I was having this internal conflict on if I liked this song or not. And then I was like well I can add it to my playlist and then skip when the ending screamo part comes on... So that's what I've been doing ever since. I'm so sorry but I just can't. But I listened to it all the way through so I can write about it. At 2:10 these three notes that switch up from the same rhythm is chefs kiss. Guys I haven't played an instrument in so long so I can't explain these in the right terms. Just bear with me. And then the guitar (I think) going weeo weeo weeo is so fun. But there's this one part. My favorite part. It's right after the first chorus, a little breathing section before verse 2. Bow!... Bow!... Bow!... These three notes y'all. It's soooooo exhilarating and I BET it feels soooooo good to play that live. It's one of those moments where less is more. It's giving the main character just fought a villain and they had a major character development and is about to avenge their family's death. Yeah don't ask me what the song is about because I'm just in my own world.
I have been really enjoying watching my friend evolve. And you can tell that he wants to succeed. Also because he says it lol. He posts a lot of content on Instagram and TikTok that y'all can check out. And he goes live on TikTok sometimes and it's always a hoot. He's either falling off a skateboard or singing emo ahh songs. I'm genuinely excited for his music career and I wish him the best of luck & protection.
Bro he's literally on live right now lol. I went to his TikTok page to get the link and that man is singing and yelling at me that he won't sing Through the Weekend. Girl whatever.
